POSITIVE HEALTH CLINICAL PRACTICE

WORKSHOP

“A  Transformational Workshop” Brought to you jointly by the Global Positive Health Institute (GPHI), and The Malaysian Lifestyle Medicine Academy. Organised by the Malaysian Society Of Lifestyle Medicine. The GPHI also collaborates with the Institute of Positive Health in the Netherlands and the Center for Positive Health Sciences at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI).

What is Positive Health?

Positive health is a journey and a state of health which emphasizes independent protective health factors based in positive psychology science and other elements of the biopsychosocial model, , in addition to addressing risk factors, such as sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits.

How does Positive Health benefit the individual?

Very importantly, positive health approach can promote and sustain positive  health behaviors. Applying such interventions can also support individuals experiencing mini and major trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder to achieve post-traumatic growth.

Positive goal setting and mindsets linked with compassionately embracing of the full range of emotions are key underpinnings. The association of positive emotions with health habits nudges patients to follow-through in an easier, nonconscious and sustainable way. Patients achieve their best selves and a greater level of health and wellbeing through adherence to healthy lifestyles and direct physiologic benefits of positive activities.

Individuals struggling with stress, loneliness, anxiety, depression, everyday and major traumas, chronic medical conditions, diabetes, heart disease, being overweight, and more may benefit from the program.

Positive health is achieved by harnessesing positive psychology interventions (PPIs) and practice strategies that promote additional protective factors beyond traditional health factors. Examples of PPIs include positive social connection, acts of kindness, doing meaningful activities, gratitude practice, savoring, positive reappraisal and reminiscence, self-compassion, regularly applying character strengths and much more.

In this positive health practice model, practitioners assess positive emotions and life satisfaction, prescribe PPIs, monitor positive activities as health activities, and promote positive interactions with patients, colleagues and coworkers.

We highlight practicing on a positive health continuum, as well as the traditional illness continuum. Sometimes, in order to make progress on the latter, we need to first focus on the former. Flourishing and becoming one’s best self through person-centered whole care allows an individual to make progress along the illness continuum. The positive health continuum is independent of the illness continuum; someone with cancer, for example, can become their best self and flourish by applying PPIs and positive health practices.
